Several credible reports show that Intel and AMD will not support DDR5 memory in 2021.
The arrival of DDR5 memory will take longer than expected, according to the sources. From China we receive information that is not at all encouraging; the upcoming Intel and AMD platforms will not incorporate this RAM . So DDR4 would be with us much longer than originally anticipated.
The problem would be a mere question of “timing”, that is, it will not arrive in 2021 in time for these platforms. We remind you of Samsung’s announcement about the mass production of DDR5 in 2021 and its EUV process. The production will take place in Pyeongtae, South Korea. In that announcement, Samsung also spoke about the benefits of EUV technology . This would reduce repetitive steps: performance is improved and production time is reduced .
Not only that, it has been reported that Samsung’s 4th generation DRAM memory with 10nm architecture (D1a) has started to be introduced with EUV technology. Therefore, in 2021 the D1a process will be used to mass produce the DDR5 and LPDDR5 chips, although we already see smartphones with that RAM technology, such as the new Xiaomi Mi 10.
In this way, these memories would not arrive in time to be reliably tested on the Intel and AMD platforms. So, I’m very afraid that Zen 4 and Rocket Lake-S will not have DDR5, which greatly lengthens the wait.
